Role of Firm:
Paragon-WMC team provided all management, labor, materials and equipment to replace two  40 year old boilers.

Brief Description of Project:
The original boilers at Bldg. 1021 boiler/chiller plant had been in operation for over 40 years. The required redundancy was not possible because one of the boilers had failed completely and the functioning boiler would fire on diesel fuel only. These boilers provide heat and hot potable water to 10 barracks 2 mess halls and other support buildings in the MP training area of Fort Leonard Wood (FLW).

The most challenging requirement of the project was taking ownership of the existing semi-functioning boiler and providing all necessary heat and hot water to the Soldiers through a very cold Missouri Winter.

The logistics of demolishing the existing boilers and replacing them with 2 new 1,000 horse power 90,000 lbs. water tube boilers in a fully operational boiler plant was a great test of Paragon/WMCs experience and ingenuity. An entire CMU/brick veneer wall of the building was removed and is being replaced with a wall containing 2 large retractable doors to make future maintenance and tube replacement easier.

As the non-functioning boiler was demolished, critical parts and controls that could be utilized as replacement parts for the functioning boiler were removed and stored on site. This allowed for fast repair to the functioning boiler and the Soldier end user experienced no loss of heat.

This was the Army’s first project at FLW funded with stimulus dollars. Paragon-WMC has been able to demonstrate the jobs created by this project both locally and at the boiler manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Nebraska. With a diesel fuel bill in excess of $1million dollars last year, the conversion back to natural gas burned in high efficiency boilers will give this project a very quick payback while greatly reducing the amount of carbon being released into the air. Both boilers are currently operational and carrying the work load on natural gas.
